BOMGen -- Revit Bill Of Materials Generator

In 2013 Blu Homes needed a way to derive a complete bill-of-materials (BOM) from the 3D Revit models being used to design our homes, which our Procurement department could then use when purchasing.  I used the Revit API to develop a suite of tools – known as BOMGen -- so Blu's designers could create BOMs directly from their models. These tools extracted metadata from the various Revit Families comprising the home model, and then linked that data with product specification data coming from our database library to create a complete BOM.

The BOM was implemented as a multi-page, versioned Excel spreadsheet that included a full list of every spec in the home, recapitulated lists by home module and room, plus industry standard door & window, lighting and casework schedules.

BOMGen included a “SmartCheck” pre-processor to identify missing or incorrect metadata as well as a BOM compare facility to identify additions or deletions from one bill-of-materials version to another.
